We are delighted to announce that former Bede Director Nick Dunne is to be presented with a Southwark COVID Civic Award 2020. Each year the Council recognises the exceptional contribution of individuals and organisations to life in Southwark. It is a tribute to Nick’s leadership of Bede that he is one of a select group set to be honoured at a special ceremony at Southwark Cathedral this October.

Nick’s award highlights the exceptional work that Bede has completed in what has been an extremely challenging year. During this time Bede has helped increasing numbers of survivors of domestic abuse, and provided online and adapted support to youth club members and people with learning disabilities. Our team also added services to assist isolated members of the community and delivered food and other essentials to those in need.

Criteria assessed for the award include outstanding personal service to the community and projects that have offered special support for vulnerable residents during the pandemic.

Wendy Cookson, Bede’s Chair of trustees, said, “I am delighted that Nick’s extraordinary work for Bede during this exceptional time is being recognised by a Civic Award. It is well deserved.”

Nick said, “I’m honoured and delighted to receive this Civic Award. It marks my retirement after nearly 20 years as Bede’s Director and it acknowledges the incredible work of everyone at Bede during the pandemic. We’d never before experienced such challenges and I am proud of how everyone responded. This Award recognizes our collective efforts during those months of great uncertainty and, on behalf of all of us at Bede, I would like to thank the Mayor and Southwark Council for this sign of the community’s appreciation.”

Please join us in congratulating Nick – and the entire team – for this recognition of Bede’s work.
