In an evening full of glitz, glamour, colour, and joyous music a group of Bede clients and staff attended the annual Southwark Stars Awards at the Tate Modern. They went to support Ciaran Bailey, who’d won the Disabled Volunteer of the Year award, 2024.

Ciaran has been coming to Bede for many years and for the past 5 years has been volunteering with our Inside /Outside project. This supports older local residents in SE16 with maintaining their gardens, weekly shopping, and odd jobs around the home. It also offers social visits from our helping hound, Hapus, to help combat isolation.

Volunteering twice a week, Ciaran loves helping people and is well known and loved by our older householders often bringing a smile to their faces. He also loves to chat over tea and biscuits!

Ciaran enjoys doing different tasks but since the lockdown ended and, supported by staff, he has regularly helped an isolated householder with her weekly shopping. The project provides her with a lifeline.

Volunteering has given Ciaran a huge sense of achievement and he’s also learned many new life skills, increasing his confidence and self-esteem.

We are very proud of everything Ciaran has achieved and are thrilled that he has won Southwark Stars Disabled Volunteer of the Year.
